The first quarter was off to a good start, but the game didn't pick up until the second with the Lions up 12-10. The Lions defence began to falter with the Rams gaining the lead for the first time in the game by just a basket. Fortunately, the Lions picked up a foul and had the opportunity to tie the game with free throws from
Megan Stewart, giving them a one-point lead. Unfortunately, their lead didn't last long as the Rams came back to score two baskets of their own from Rams Stefanija Mrvaljevic and Haley Robertson.
Â
The score was 17-22 for the Rams. The Lions were beginning to feel the game slip away until
Megan MacLeod got a basket to narrow the score by three points followed by another basket from
Emma Jonas closing in on the lead. Lions
Lauren Golding had a phenomenal steal that allowed her to garner free throws to tie the Rams in the final two minutes of the first half. In the last seconds of the quarter, the Lions finish the half strong as MacLeod scored a basket giving the lions a two-point lead. It didn't last long as the Rams got two free throws to tie the score once more, concluding the first half with a 26-26 draw.
Â
The Lions dominated the third quarter as they started to pull away with the lead early on with a score of 32-26. Ottawa native
Alysha Pinck scored a wicked three-pointer. The Rams continued to add pressure on the Lions as Golding made a three-pointer followed by a basket from Rams, Bronwyn Williams, to make it a one-point game. Fortunately, the Lions weren't fazed as they continued to play strong defence and gained a basket of their own with a great steal from Pinck, a three-pointer from Stewart, followed by a buzzer-beater from Golding. The squad sealed the third with a score of 46-35 outscoring the Rams 20-9 in the quarter.
Â
In the final quarter of the game, the Lions' momentum stayed with them as they played strong defence against the Rams. The crowd was electric by the thought of the Lions defeating a nationally ranked opponent, and the Lions felt the energy.
