On Wednesday night, the York University Lions women's basketball team was narrowly defeated by the Laurier Golden Hawks 52-51, at home at the Tait Mackenzie Gym.
Â
In the final minute of the game, both teams jostled for the win, but a Lion's foul allowed the Golden Hawks to take the game with two free throws in the dying minutes.
Â
In the first quarter, the Lions came out roaring scoring six points in a row from
Emma Jonas,
Katrina Collins-Samuels, and
Alysha Pinck. They took control of the game early, keeping the Golden Hawks at bay, finishing the first quarter up 14-6.
Â
The second quarter followed suit with the Lions scoring quickly with another jump shot from Pinck. The Golden Hawks tried to stay in the game and had several attempts to get some points, but fortunately for the Lions, they weren't able to successfully sink any buckets. The Lions took full advantage and continued to add to the scoreboard ending the quarter 24-17.
Â
In the third, the Lions aimed to keep their lead, but the Golden Hawks wanted to redeem themselves. The game was neck and neck with the Golden Hawks scoring a three-pointer and two jump shots to tie, but thanks to a foul from the visitors, Collins- Samuels' free throws kept them in the lead ending the quarter 37-31.
Â
The fourth remained tense with the Golden Hawks inching closer and closer to catch up to the Lions, eventually taking the lead for the first time in the game with a three-pointer from Maya Day. But their lead didn't last long as the Lions quickly gained their composure with shots from Collins- Samuels and
Cyanna King. Ultimately, the Golden Hawks edged out the home team with game clinching free-throws giving them the narrow win.
Â
Golding lead the team with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Pinck dropped 10 points shooting 5-11 from the floor in the loss.
Â
The Lions now sit fourth in their division with a 2-3 record, and will play their next game this Sunday at home against the Waterloo Warriors, who have yet to win a game this season, at 1 pm.
