The York University Lions women's basketball team suffered a 57-53 defeat against the No. 3 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens away at the Raven's Nest in Ottawa on Saturday night.
Â
Both teams played hard at the start, but the Lions came out hot gaining the lead early in the quarter. Surrey, B.C., native
Emma Jonas helped the Lions pull away with the lead by dropping a three-pointer, followed by a layup from
Megan MacLeod and a three from
Lauren Golding. The Lions offence dominated as they closed the first quarter, 12-8.
Â
In the second quarter, the Ravens started to take control of the game as they scored 18 points over the Lions 15, but because of the hefty score deficit, the Lions prevailed with a score of 27-26 at the end of the first half.
Â
In the third quarter, the Lions continued to get baskets gaining the lead, but their defence began to falter as the Ravens started to stack more points on the board. Ravens Tatyanna Burke scored a layup to tie the score, followed by two free throws to secure their lead. The momentum gave the Ravens the advantage in the third as they led 43-36.
Â
In the final quarter, the Lions came back, scoring 17 points over the Ravens 14. They closed the gap with free throws from
Katrina Collins-Samuels, but the Ravens took full advantage of the Lions' mistakes and pulled away with the win.
Â
Cyanna King led the team with 17 points, followed by Collins- Samuels with 11.
Â
The Lions aim to get back into the win column when they play their next game this Friday on the road against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 6pm.
