The York University Lions women's basketball team fell on the road to the Lakehead Thunderwolves 67-66 on Friday night at the CJ Sanders Fieldhouse.
Â
The Lions came out aggressive in the opening frame, with three pointers from
Megan MacLeod and
Megan Stewart to give the visitors an early 13-9 lead.
Â
Lions forward
Lauren Golding scored six straight points to open the second quarter. Stewart and MacLeod continued to pour in shots, only extending the Lions lead in the frame going into halftime up 33-26.
Â
The Voyageurs came out of their halftime huddle with some life, outscoring the Lions 11-2 in the first two minutes of the third to take the lead. But the veteran Lions squad hung in tight as the two teams traded baskets from then on. A trio of unanswered shots would give the Thunderwolves room to breathe as they closed out the quarter up 55-51.
Â
In the final frame, scoring came often and early for the Lions through MacLeod who accounted for the majority of the teams points. Two quick baskets tied the scoring at 55-55 only a minute in. The story remained much of the same for the rest of the quarter as each team answered back after the other had scored. With 2:25 left in the game, the Thunderwolves went up 67-65 after a layup as the score remained the same for a heart wrenching two minutes until the Lions found themselves at the free throw line with 27 seconds left on the clock. Splitting both shots going one for two, the Lions fouled the home team giving them two shots of their own from the charity stripe now only down 67-66.
Miraculously the Thunderwolves missed both shots giving the Lions a chance to take the lead. With four seconds left on the clock the Lions shot a three-pointer that ultimately fell short giving the Thunderwolves the narrow win.
Â
The Lions are now 5-6 on the season, and will return to the court tomorrow in a rematch against against the Thunderwovles with tipoff scheduled for 6pm.
