On Saturday, the York University Lions men's basketball team suffered a disappointing defeat on the road against the Guelph Gryphons 96-71.
Â
The Lions were coming off of a great win against the Toronto Varsity Blues only a night ago and hoped to continue their winning ways, but the Gryphons had other plans.
Â
The first quarter started off neck and neck with both sides getting buckets until the Gryphons began to pull away. Tommy Yanchus hit a trio of early three pointers, dropping 13 points in the quarter for the Gryphons, ending it with a score of 28-15 for the home team.
Â
In the second quarter the Lions made a strong effort to close the lead with jump shots coming from
Joshua Kagande with 9:39 on the clock, and
Tyler Pryce a possession later. Unfortunately, the Gryphons regained their composure, and Yanchus scored seven straight points heading into halftime pushing the score to 54-37.
Â
After shooting better than 50-40-90 on the floor in the first half, the Lions were able to hold the Gryphons to just 37.8% from field goal range, and 13.3% from behind the arc in the second, but their defensive efforts wouldn't be enough to contain Guelph, dropping the game 96-71.
Â
Lions guard
DeAndrae Pierre garnered 15 points for his squad, all in the second half while playing a total of 29 minutes, and
Nick Russell dropped 13 points in 27 minutes of play. Guelph's backcourt tandem of Yanchus and Glanville scored 27 points apiece in the Gryphons win.
Â
The Lions will look to get back into the win column at home against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at the Tait-Mackenzie Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm.
