On Wednesday night, the York University Lions men's basketball fell to the No. 7 nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks 92-84 at Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The Lions came out strong, gaining the lead early over the Golden Hawks with points from
DeAndrae Pierre,
Prince Kamunga, and
Somto Dimanochie. The Golden Hawks were quick on their tails, scoring baskets of their own from Kemel Archer and a three-pointer from Ali Sow to take the lead. The teams were neck and neck in the first quarter and ended it tied 23-23.
Â
The second quarter was a lot tougher for the Lions as the Golden Hawks gained a quick lead over them with five straight points from Sow. Lions guard
Tyler Pryce made a great jump shot, but Sow answered back with a jump shot of his own. Both teams jostled for the lead to close the second, but the Golden Hawks came out on top 46-45 heading into halftime.
Â
The final quarter of the game was anything but boring as both teams continued to jostle for the win. A foul from behind the arc committed by the Golden Hawks allowed the Lions to pick up points with Kamunga hitting all three free throws. Haplessly their lead didn't last long as the Golden Hawks came back, and continued to control the rest of the fourth quarter, taking the win 92-84.
Â
Kamunga dropped 21 points for the Lions, while Pierre poured in 17 of his own.
Â
The men play their next game at home this Sunday against the Waterloo Warriors at 3pm.
