The York University Lions women's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the No. 7 nationally ranked Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon after a hard-fought game.
The Lions started off very strong, taking the first set of the game. It was York's
Kayla Clennon who provided the Lions with their first point of the game after the Badgers garnered their first point as a result of a service error. This would be the first of 22.5 points for Clennon throughout the game. York's
Olivia Kim provided a total of four kills for the Lions in the set while Clennon was also able to give the Lions five kills during the set. The Lions finished ahead of the Badgers by seven points, winning 25-18.
The Badgers took the second set by a meagre two points. Lions middle
Aleksandra Steins dominated with a total of four points, three of them kills. However, the Badgers ultimately took the set-win over the Lions tying it at 1-1.
The third set saw another set-win from the Badgers. York's
Wesley-Ann Bailey and Kim opened with a block to take the first point, while Clennon was able to provide five kills for the Lions. The Badgers were able to remain ahead of the Lions for most of the set, getting a big lead early on when the Badgers had three points and the Lions had two. Badgers' Emily Armstrong was able to serve five times in a row, which contributed to her teams 8-2 lead. Towards the end of the set, the Badgers led 24 – 21 and York's
Sarah Williams was able to get a kill in before the visitors took the set.
The Badgers also won the last set of the game, finishing six points ahead of York, keeping their season undefeated.
The Lions' Clennon and Bailey were the top scorers of the game with 22.5 and 12 points respectively while the Badgers' Laura Candotta had a total of 15 points for Brock.
The Lions are now 1-3 on the season and will play the McMaster Marauders on Friday at home at 6pm.
