The York University women's hockey team picked up a big 4-1 win against the Queen's Gaels on Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Lions had an impressive game scoring four power play goals against the Queen's Gaels, whose goaltender, Makenzy Arsenault, who came into the game leading the OUA with a 1.17 goals against average and ranked second with a .947 save percentage. This was York's first win against Queen's since the 2015-16 season when the Lions beat the Gaels 2-1 in overtime.

The Lions had a strong first period despite the Gaels getting on the scoreboard first. At 8:27, the Gaels took a 1-0 lead on the Lions with a goal by Nicole Posesorski. The Lions out-possessed the Gaels for the remainder of the period keeping majority of the play in the Gaels' end and taking a total of ten shots on goal. The Lions were on their first power play of the game, when
Brooke Anderson, who was assisted by Jenna Grey and
Kelsey McHolm, took a slap shot from just within the blue line and tied the game 1-1 at 14:10. The first period ended with the Lions and Gaels tied 1-1.

At 6:42 into the second period, the Lions took a 2-1 lead as
Courtney Gardiner made her way around three defencemen and found the top right corner, scoring an unassisted goal on a power play. Nearly seven minutes later, the Lions scored their third power play goal, courtesy of
Kara Washer who was assisted by
Cynthia St. Cyr. The Lions took another 12 shots on goal during the second period and held onto their 3-1 lead as the period ended.

A close call at the start of the third nearly gave the Gaels another goal on the scoreboard when a puck just squeezed passed
Eva Hall, however a Lions defenceman was able to clear the puck.
At 8:19,
Erin Locke who was assisted by Grey and Taylor Murphy, scored the Lions' fourth power play goal, taking a big 4-1 lead on the Gaels. The Lions came away with a 4-1 victory with the help of
Eva Hall who made a total of 25 saves.

The Lions will be competing again tomorrow, Feb. 9, against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena. Puck-drop is scheduled for 3pm.
