The York University Lions women's soccer team fell to the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 in their season opener at home at Alumni Field on Saturday.

The Gryphons opened the scoring early in the first half with
Victoria Hinchliffe finding the left side of the net in the 16
th minute.

It was a tight contest leading into the second half. First-year forward
Vanessa Santoriello would put the Lions on the scoreboard in the 64
th minute of the second frame. The rookie buried the ball off of a save for her first career goal as a Lion.

Ultimately, the Gryphons would close the match and find the game clinching goal as
Kate Knfalec was able to pull away from the Lions defence in the dying minutes of the game, and beat keeper
Danitza Indacochea off a breakaway.

The Lions will return to the field next Thursday as they host the McMaster Marauders for the Frosh Frenzy event. Game starts at 6pm at Alumni Field.
