LIONS SCORE BIG UPSET WIN OVER NO. 8 MARAUDERS

The York University Lions women's soccer team scored a big upset victory on Thursday night with a 1-0 win over the No. 8 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders at Alumni Field.

Rookie Vanessa Santoriello continued her hot start to the season with the lone goal of the game in the 67th minute, finishing off a pass from Kiyani Johnson. It was Santoriello's second goal of the season as she has scored both of her team's goals this year.

The result was even more impressive as the Lions had only 10 players for the majority of the contest after Jessica Lush was sent off with a red card in the 27th minute.

The Lions had a couple of decent chances early. Johnson sent a shot just high after Marissa Castellano sent the ball in behind the back line in the 23rd minute. Three minutes later, Jotam Chouhan had a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that Kalifornia Mitchell headed towards the net, but Juliana Hifawi was there to make the save.

Just before the break the Marauders had their best chance of the half but Carling Gould's free kick went wide.

Chouhan had another free kick in the 66th minute that was too strong, but one minute later the Lions were rewarded for their efforts with Santoriello's goal.

The Marauders had one last chance on net in injury time but Mary Craig's header went just wide.

The win was the Lions' first of the season, improving their record to 1-1-0. McMaster, who had gotten off to a 2-0-0 start to the year, suffered their firsts loss with the result.

Next up for the Lions is their first road game of the season, on Sunday afternoon against the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo, Ont. Kick-off is set for 1pm.
