The No. 4 nationally ranked York University Lions men's soccer team defeated the Western Mustangs 4-0 on Friday night at Alumni Field.
Â
As if the drama of two 2018 OUA medallist teams meeting up was not enough, this game would witness two delays. The first being a power outage that would disrupt the start of the match by 20 minutes. While the second was due to weather, as thunderstorms brought action to a complete stop at the 59th minute for just over an hour.
Â
But the Lions display was nothing short of exciting as they extended their 38 game unbeaten streak over OUA opponents to 39.
Â
Lions leading scorer
Lucas Puntillo got his team rolling early as he volleyed a shot off a headed pass from striker
Christopher Jacovou, smashing it past Mustangs fifth-year keeper Kody Thomson. His goal would put the Lions up 1-0 heading into halftime.
Â
In the second frame
Jorgo Nika could do no wrong, finding the back of the net twice in two minutes. In the 47
th minute, fifth-year defender
Josh Kiselyov's throw-in found Nika in the box who headed it in with his back to the net. Two minutes later, Thomson's clearance found Nika at the 45-yard line. With a one-time effort, his shot drilled through the defence rocketing past the Mustangs keeper, putting the Lions up 3-0.
Â
After the weather delay, business resumed as usual for the Lions. Rookie forward
Merci Yuma found himself on the receiving end of a piercing pass from midfielder
Vaughan Bianchi. Merci would make no mistake netting his second goal of the season.
Â
With the win the Lions lead the OUA West Division with a 3-0-1 record, while the Mustangs fall to 2-3 in fifth place.
Â
The Lions will be back at Alumni Field on Sunday to host the Brock Badgers at 8:15pm. It will be their final home game before going on a four game road trip.
