LIONS DROP 3-1 DECISION TO THE WARRIORS

The York University Lions men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Waterloo Warriors to open the new year at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
 
The Lions got 2020 off to a great start as they took an early lead over the Warriors. Toronto native Grant Lynch scored a strong kill for the Lions. The Lions continued to lead the Warriors by nearly doubling their score. Despite the Warriors efforts, they were unable to block the strong kills from Lions Luke de Greeff, Andrew Shotbolt and Toure Nwakwesi The Lions continued to lead over the Warriors, despite their efforts and continued to dominate 25-19.
 
In the second set, the Warriors led early with a series of kills until two aces from Shotbolt helped them get ahead for the first time, but the Warriors were quick to regain their composure as they once again began to lead. Aleksander Grzegorczyk scored two kills while Nwakwesi pressured three attack errors helped the Lions tie the score and gained the lead. Tied 24-24 at the end, Andrew Smondulak scored a powerful kill followed by a Lions error that ended the score 26-24 for the Warriors.
 
In the third set, the Warriors once again gained an early lead. The Lions were unable to catch up until Toronto native Andrew Tauhid scored back-to-back kills followed by a service ace from Dan Everton. For a while, the Lions seemed to have the third set in their grasp until a series of errors put the Warriors back into the lead. The set was once again tied at the end, 25-25, until Waterloo scored two points to win and take the 2-1 lead.
 
The final set was do or die for the Lions to stay in the game the Warriors were hungry to finish the game and add a game to their win column, and they came out and took the lead early by a wide margin. The Lions were once again playing catch up. They were down by one until a series of Lion errors widened the Warriors lead by seven points. The Lions continued to fight back, but it was too little too late as the Warriors came out on top with 25-19 and ended the game 3-1.
 
Shotbolt led the team in aces with four and Tauhid with one, giving them a two-way tie for second place for the most service aces. de Greeff led the team with the most amount of kills with a whopping 12, followed by Shotbolt again with nine and Tauhid with seven.
 
The Lions play their next game on Sunday against the Guelph Gryphons, at home at 3pm, where they aim to get back into the win column.
