Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Stella Isaac

GOLDING'S CAREER NIGHT LEADS LIONS PAST MARAUDERS IN OVERTIME

The York University Lions women's basketball team had a golden game against the McMaster Marauders as they dished the Marauders their fourth loss in a row with a 91-84 win in overtime on Saturday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Third-year Lauren Golding shined throughout the game as she finished with a career high of 35 points and 17 rebounds to help the Lions take their second win of 2020. York's point guard Katrina Collins-Samuels also led her team by setting up the right plays to help the Lions get into the position to win

The third quarter proved to be the turnaround for the Lions, where they added 31 points to the scoreboard, which helped them get marginally close to the Marauders for the first time in game.

By the beginning of the quarter, the Lions were down 32-22 and it seemed the Marauders, who were the U SPORTS champions last season, were going to continue their lead on the Lions. However, the Lions fought for their turnaround. Golding opened up the third with the first eight points for the Lions, which included back-to-back threes. She would finish the quarter with a total of 15 points.

Cyanna King was also able to add to the Lions points when she received an assist dished out by Collins-Samuels. King's two-pointer was later followed by a successful free throw and the Lions were then down 48-43.

The remainder of the quarter saw two points from Collins-Samuels, Megan MacLeod and Madison Bardoel. Golding was able to finish the quarter with a three-pointer to bring the score to 59-53 with the Marauders leading. Golding's shot would foreshadow the final point she was able to put on the scoreboard for the Lions in overtime.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions proved to be offensively stronger than the Marauders and continued their comeback. They put down 23 points to the Marauders' 17. MacLeod opened with a three for the Lions, which was soon followed by a two-pointer by Golding.

It was MacLeod who was able to tie the game for the Lions with a three-pointer, which brought the game to 66-66 with a little over five minutes remaining in the game. The Lions tied two more times in the fourth before going into overtime.

The game could have gone to anyone of the teams as both fought to the last second. However, the Lions finished up with 15 points in overtime and took the win against the Marauders.

"We had a rough first half, we just made the decision not to give up," said Golding during a post-game interview. "None of us gave up and everyone contributed whether on the court or on the bench."

The Lions will be playing the Nipissing Lakers on Jan. 24 at the Tait McKenzie Centre in their next action.
