The No. 10 nationally ranked York University Lions women's hockey team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 4-1 at the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa, Ont., on Friday night.
All four lines got into the scoring action as the Lions scored once early in each period and added an empty netter to cruise to the victory. The win improved the Lions' record to 11-5-0-1, good enough to hold down second place in the OUA standings.
The lone goal of the first period came courtesy of
Madison Davey, who found the back of the net at 9:35 for a 1-0 lead.
The Lions wasted little time adding to the score in the second as
Kara Washer netted a power play goal less than 90 seconds into the period to make the score 2-0 for the visitors. Their goal in the third period was even faster as
Brooke Anderson scored just 25 seconds in to make it 3-0.
Ontario Tech finally got on the scoreboard at 5:39 of the final frame on a goal by Natalie Wozney but that was all they could muster.
Avery Reeves had the empty netter, sealing the win with 19 seconds left on the clock.
Rookie
Julianna Thomson earned the win in net, making 18 saves, while Celine Tessier stopped 15 of the 18 shots she faced at the other end of the rink.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Kingston, Ont., for a game against the Queen's Gaels at the Memorial Centre. Puck drop is 7:30pm.
