LIONS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO FIVE WITH DOMINANT WIN OVER VOYAGEURS

The York University Lions women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday evening with a lopsided 75-48 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The Lions came out strong in the first half and dominated the Voyageurs. Lauren Golding led the team with 10 points, followed by Megan MacLeod with eight to close the half with 31-22 lead.

The second half commenced and the Lions were looking to keep the same energy in the second half as they did in the first. The half kicked off with a great steal from Megan Stewart, which ended in a three-pointer from Emma Jonas.

The strong Lions defence caused a great deal of Voyageurs turnovers and mistakes, which only propelled the Lions forward. An excellent pump fake from Katrina Collins-Samuels helped extend the home team's lead to 40-27, which forced the Voyageurs to call a timeout to try and recuperate. But the Lions continued to dominate as they led the Voyageurs 45-29 midway through the quarter.

Their foes started to gain some baskets of their own with a three-pointer from Bailey Tabin, but the Lions were too far ahead and ended the third up 49-36.

In the fourth, the Lions didn't take their foot off the gas as they plowed through the Voyageurs. The Voyageurs gained a break and were looking for the net, but Taylor McAlpine came in with a stable block to take the wind out Laurentian's sails. The Lions continued to control play in the final quarter, outscoring the Voyageurs 26-12 to cruise to the win.

Golding's five-game run of recording a double-double came to an end but she still had a solid game with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. MacLeod had the lone double-double for the Lions with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Collins-Samuels finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block.

The Lions improved to 10-6 with the victory and remain in third place in the OUA Central Division standings. They will look to continue their winning ways this week when they head out on the road to face the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont., on Wednesday night.
