All of the McMaster Marauders starters had over 10 points, as their men's basketball side took an early lead over the York University Lions men's basketball team and would not relinquish it for the duration of the contest.
They downed the Lions 95-72 at Burridge Gymnasium, including a 31-point opening quarter that allowed the host Marauders to breathe in the later three quarters of the game. The loss was York's fifth in a row.
It wasn't all negatives for the Lions – they saw
Prince Kamunga put up double-digit points for his sixth consecutive game. He headlined the Lions offence with 19 points, and also had a double-double with 13 rebounds.
After the first quarter, the second and third were much more balanced. York was outscored for a second consecutive quarter in the second, but only 20-18. They went shot-for-shot with McMaster and kept the Marauder lead at 18 going into half time.
They matched McMaster again after the game resumed, with both teams notching 18 points in the next quarter. Kamunga had his best frame, putting up seven in the third.
Alex Thielen had five points off the bench in the fourth quarter, the most of any York reserve players in a single quarter during this contest.
Despite being outscored in the game, the Lions' shooting was on point from beyond the arc. They led the game, with a 22.7 per cent three-point shooting percentage, ahead of McMaster's 20 per cent.
The Lions now head west to Windsor, Ont., in search of their third win of the season next Saturday. It's their first game of the season against the Lancers, and is scheduled for an 8pm start at St. Denis Centre.
