LIONS USE MONSTER FOURTH QUARTER TO COME BACK AND DEFEAT RIDGEBACKS

The York University Lions men's basketball team used a monster fourth quarter to come back and defeat the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 91-88 on home court at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Wednesday night.

Trailing by 16 points heading into the final frame, the Lions came all the way back to secure their third win of the season.

In the first quarter, the Lions came out hard and got on the scoreboard early with a jump shot made from Prince Kamunga, but the Ridgebacks came back to score a jump shot of their own to tie the score. The Lions began pulling away after that thanks to a pair of free throws and a three-pointer and they finished the quarter with an overwhelming 25-15 lead.

In the second, the Lions were on a roll as they were still leading the Ridgebacks 33-25, but the Ridgebacks began gaining on them with a three-pointer from AJ Cummings followed by a jump shot from Graddy Kanku to make it a three-point game. A dunk from Kanku and a layup from Patrick Mpoyi put the Ridgebacks in the lead for the first time. The teams were neck-and-neck until the Ridgebacks took back the lead ending the first half up 48-41.

In the third, the Lions started out electric with Yacine Loe scoring a dunk, but they still trailed the Ridgebacks. DeAndrae Pierre scored three points to help the Lions close in on the lead, but Ammar Hassan scored a three-pointer to widen Ontario Tech's. The third period ended with Ridgeback leading the Lions 72-56.

In the final quarter, Tyler Pryce and Kamunga opened the scoring for the Lions. Kamunga forced a defensive foul and added a point, following a three-pointer to close in with a 74-70 score. A three-pointer from Pryce tied the score, giving the Lions a chance to come back and regain their lead.

In the final two minutes of the game, both teams were fighting tooth and nail for the win. Pierre gained a basket and a foul to put the Lions in the lead in the final 90 seconds. The Ridgebacks quickly regained the lead, causing Lions' head coach, Nate Philippe to call a time out. The Lions recuperated as Pryce scored a layup giving them a one-point lead in the final minute of play, but the Ridgebacks answered back with a layup to put themselves back in the lead. Pierre went back to the free-throw line to give the Lions a one-point edge, and Pryce caused a defensive foul to put them up to two, and a free throw from Pierre secured the comeback win.

The Lions will close the season on Friday night when the Queen's Gaels come to the Tait McKenzie Centre for the campaign finale. The game begins at 8pm.
