The York University Lions women's basketball team dropped a 57-44 decision to the No. 7 nationally ranked Windsor Lancers on the road on Friday night.
The Lancers wouldn't give up the lead for the duration of the contest to hand the Lions their third straight defeat. Despite that, they remain above .500 at 10-9 on the year. Two of those three losses have come to nationally-ranked opponents.
In the game's opening quarter, Windsor opened up an early advantage by matching the Lions' point output. Save for an early 2-2 tie, the Lancers held at least a one-point advantage over York for the duration of the opening quarter.
The game's second stanza saw a shortage of point production for both teams – a total of 14 points were scored between the two sides. Four of those were York's, and the first of those points came on a lay-up by
Katrina Collins-Samuels, which broke a five-minute scoring draught for the Lions. At halftime, Windsor led 25-15.
The third quarter went much differently for the Lions – it saw their offence explode for more than four times the points they produced in the second quarter, notching 17 of them – and 11 of those came in the last 4:07 of the frame. That cut the Windsor lead to seven points at 39-32.
While the final quarter also saw double-digit point production for the Lions, it wasn't enough, and they dropped the game by a 13-point margin.
The Lions led in three-point shooting percentage (20.0) for the duration of the contest, and both
Lauren Golding and
Megan Stewart posted 10 points each to lead York's offensive output.
The Lions will stay on the road on Saturday night and will be in London, Ont., to face the Western Mustangs. It will be their final road game of the regular season.
