LIONS END SEASON WITH VICTORY OVER GOLDEN HAWKS

The York University Lions men's hockey team wrapped up the 2019-20 campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Lions had already been eliminated from the playoffs but closed the season with some solid play over the last few weeks, going 4-1-1 in their last six contests, with their only regulation loss coming to the second-place Ryerson Rams.

After a scoreless first period on Saturday night, the Lions finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second when Alex Mowbray redirected a pass from Tyler Higgins beside the net to give his team a 1-0 advantage. It lasted less than four minutes, however, as the Golden Hawks levelled the score on a power play tally by Matt McJannet.

The score remained 1-1 heading into the second intermission.

The Lions wasted little time taking the lead again in the third as Peter De Coppi scored 4:10 into the frame to make it 2-1. They continued to dominate play throughout the rest of the period and held on for the win.

Mack Shields, playing in the final game of his career, was solid in net in making 27 saves for the victory.

The Golden Hawks had a chance to move up to fifth in the OUA West standings but ended up sixth with the loss to the Lions. They will begin post-season play later this week.
