FLURRY OF OFFENCE HIGHLIGHTS SPIRITED DRAW BETWEEN YORK AND CARLETON

ARPAN KAUR // yorkulions.ca

A 13-save performance by George Tzimas in the York Lions goal helped his men's soccer squad hold down the top spot in the OUA East, holding off an onslaught of Carleton Ravens offence from the open, leading to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at York Lions Stadium.

The draw gives No. 4 York four out of a possible six points in their weekend home-and-home against Carleton, propelling them into the top spot over the No. 2-ranked Ravens.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions couldn't have asked for a better start to the game offensively. After Pedro Aparacio was fouled in the box by a Ravens player, resulting in a penalty, Lions forward Dieu Merci Yuma put it into the back of the net with ease. That gave the Lions a crucial early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
  • Carleton's Matteo de Brienne equalized the score right before half time with a goal of the week candidate. He took a lobbing pass from Tareq Hammad, and one-touched a rocket of a shot to tie the game up.
  • The rest of the game featured many scoring chances, with 30 total shots directed toward the net between the two teams (20 for Carleton, 10 for York). However, the keepers stood tall, and 1-1 remained the score until the final whistle.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Yuma scores his 12th goal of the season in seven games, pulling back into a tie with McMaster's Dusan Kovacevic on the OUA goal-scoring leaderboard.
  • The Lions extend their undefeated streak to seven games, improving their record to 6-1-1, retaining their top spot of the OUA Eastern division.
  • The Lions third-year goalkeeper, George Tzimas, made an astounding 13 saves on 14 shots on goal, improving his save percentage average at .889.
LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will play their last regular-season home game at the York Lions Stadium on Friday, Oct. 29, kicking off at 8pm. The Lions will look to extend their unbeaten streak to eight games as they take on the Queen's Gaels.
