An own goal by the Queen's Gaels and a late tally from
Omar Marzouk brought the York University Lions men's soccer team back from a potential defeat and gave the No. 1 nationally ranked team their eighth win of the 2021 campaign Friday night at York Lions Stadium.
Â
The win, played in wet and windy conditions under the lights, was a character victory for the Lions against a worthy opponent, and solidified York's first place positioning in an airtight OUA East division.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Lions had a spirited start with five straight shots directed to the Queen's net, the Gaels put a stop to it on an odd man break to the Lions net. Andrea Gortana deflected a pass from Jason Cho into the back of the net.
- The rest of the first half remained tight, but the Lions finally broke through with a goal late in the second half. A clearing attempt by the Gaels deflected off goalkeeper Tyler Gowdy and into the net, tying the game in the 69th minute.
- York then took the lead in the 80th minute, on a play where Marzouk found the back of the net.
