The No. 5 ranked York University Lions field hockey team put an exclamation point on a successful regular season with two convincing victories over the Queen's Gaels in the final two games of the year Saturday in Kingston, Ont., taking the first game 2-0, and the second one 2-1.
The win will place York's regular season record at 4-2-2, a solid second place in an OUA East which saw Toronto and the Lions jockey for position all season long over four straight head-to-head contests. The Blues will take the top spot in the division, posting a 6-0-2 record and host the division semifinal versus York.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first game, Amber Sandhu scored both goals for York in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Those stood as the game's only goals, and the game ended as a 2-0 final.
- The Lions also received some offensive contributions from their younger player cohort in the second game. Mackenzie Gee and Natalie Winter were the goal-scorers for York in their 2-1 Game 2 victory over Queen's.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Game 1 was not the only match this week which featured a result sparked by Sandhu offence – she tied the game late versus Toronto on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with her sixth goal of the OUA season. These two goals put her second in the OUA in goals with eight and earned her both OUA athlete of the week and York female athlete of the week honours for the period ending Oct. 25.
LOOKING AHEAD
The next contest for the Lions will be a playoff game at Toronto on Saturday, Oct. 30, facing off against top-ranked Toronto on the road in the OUA semifinal. The No. 2 Varsity Blues won the season series 2-0-2 over York, with the most recent contest resulting in a 2-2 draw at Alumni Field.
