Down by a goal, the York University Lions women's soccer team needed a break to keep their playoff fate in their own hands, and it came in the form of
Kalifornia Mitchell's heroics.
Two goals five minutes apart from the team's scoring leader were all that was needed to lift the Lions past the No. 9 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels. 2-1 held as the final score from Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont.
The win flips the script on Queen's, after York endured a 3-0 loss to the Gaels on Friday at York Lions Stadium.
With the win, York grabs their conference's top wild card spot, booking their ticket to an OUA quarterfinal match-up with the Nipissing Lakers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions kick-start the final regular-season game of the regular season on a high note, maintaining the majority of the possession in the game's opening minutes.
- However, not long after, Queen's striker Christie Gray opened the scoring in the 13th minute. She found the back of the net off a pass by Hannah Melchoirre, scoring her second goal in two games.
- Right after halftime, the Lions came out swinging. Mitchell stole the show, scoring two similar goals early in the second half. Mitchell scores the Lions first goal in the 53rd minute, after receiving a feed from Sabrina Fabiano. Five minutes after, Mitchell strikes again in the 58th minute with an unassisted goal, in the same spot and with the same precise kick.
- The score would hold until the final whistle, giving York their first win over a fellow nationally-ranked opponent this season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Mitchell's memorable afternoon concluded with excellent statistical numbers, as she wrapped up her 10th game with three shots, all three reaching the goal, and two of which ending up in the back of the net.
- Both teams had excellent chances at the net with the Gaels finishing with seven shots and the Lions finishing with an impressive 13 shots.
LOOKING AHEAD
With the victory, the Lions advance to the playoffs, where they will face the No. 2 seeded Nipissing Lakers. Nipissing have the league's second-best record (8-1-1), and hadn't conceded a goal all season until Friday, Oct. 29 against Toronto. The OUA quarterfinal is slated to take place this coming week in North Bay, Ont.
