In a game between two nationally ranked opponents, a goal in each half was enough for the No. 2 Toronto Varsity Blues to hand the No. 3 York University Lions field hockey team a road loss at the Back Campus Fields in Toronto, Ont.
The loss is York's first of the season, dropping their record to 2-1-1 after drawing Toronto late last week.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sam McCrory got the scoring started early for Toronto, giving them a 1-0 lead in the first quarter after the teams traded chances early in the contest.
- The game remained at 1-0 for a long portion, until the teams hit the dying minutes of the contest.
- That's when Anna Costanzo deflected a long shot past Lions goalkeeper Serena Vilde for an insurance goal, making the score 2-0 Toronto as the game winded down to a close.
LOOKING AHEAD
York and Toronto – two of the best teams in Canada – still play each other two more times in a row before they're able to see another opponent. They don't have to wait very long for their next meeting; York hosts the Varsity Blues this Friday, Oct. 8, at Alumni Field for a rematch. York will look to bring the season series back to level terms.
