LIONS LOSE NAIL-BITER TO GEE-GEES IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL

The York University Lions football team carried a lead into the fourth quarter but a late touchdown by the host Ottawa Gee-Gees secured a 20-17 victory in their home opener at TD Place in Ottawa on Saturday night.

The back-and-forth affair featured four lead changes and a strong defensive effort from the Lions, but the visitors came up just short to fall to 0-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions got on the board first just a few minutes into the contest on a 5-yard touchdown run by Darnel Jarrett, his second score of the season.
  • Gee-Gees kicker Campbell Fair tallied four straight field goals – one in the first quarter, one in the second and two in the third – for his team's only points of the game through the first three quarters.
  • Prior to the final frame, the Lions also scored two points on an Ottawa-conceded safety early in the second quarter.
  • Less than four minutes into the last frame, Lions rookie defensive back Mack Bannatyne recorded the first interception of his career and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown, giving the Lions a 16-12 lead. Shortly after, kicker Dante Mastrogiuseppe recorded a rouge to increase the lead to five.
  • With just 1:06 remaining, the Gee-Gees found the end zone for the first time on a five-yard pass from Ben Maracle to Nicholas Gendron that cemented the win.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Lions quarterback Noah Craney had his best game of the season, going 23-of-38 for 266 yards. He also threw three interceptions.
  • Five different Lions receivers recorded at least two catches. Leading the way was veteran Alex Daley with six for 95 yards. He also had four punt returns for 89 yards and three kick-off returns for 25 yards.
  • Bannatyne wasn't the only rookie to pick up an interception. Fellow defensive back Raekwon Lewis-Gibbs recorded his own, also the first of his career.
  • Ottawa's Maracle finished with 24 completions on 46 attempts for 283 yards, with the one touchdown and two picks.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions play their final road game of the season next Saturday in the biggest match-up of the year, the 51st Red & Blue Bowl against the rival Toronto Varsity Blues (1-2) at Varsity Centre. Following that game, the Lions will return home for two straight, first against the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, Oct. 23 followed by the season finale rematch against the Varsity Blues on Saturday, Oct. 30.
