Two first half goals by the York University Lions women's soccer team were enough to earn the victory over the RMC Paladins. They win 3-0, improving to 3-1 on the season and pulling into a tie with the Ottawa Gee-Gees for second in the OUA east division.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- York opened the scoring with the first goal of the game off a corner kick from Kalifornia Mitchell. She chipped the ball into the box and Bianca Jack finished the cross with a header, opening the scoring for the Lions in the 26th minute.
- 10 minutes later, York doubled their lead when Marissa Castellano found an opening and finessed a well-placed shot past RMC keeper Breanna Habinski in the 36th minute.
- York nearly had their third goal of the game off the foot of Jotam Chouhan, who had a powerful strike stopped on a highlight-reel dive by Habinski.
- They would get their third goal in the second half of the game, with rookie Sydney Sherwood adding her second goal of the season shortly after checking into the contest.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- York had an explosive offensive performance in the game, registering 24 shots and not allowing any RMC shots on net through the entire contest. Equally as impressively, RMC netminder Breanna Habinski registered 12 saves and was busy all afternoon.
- Despite not registering a goal, rookie Sabrina Fabiano recorded six shots and was one of the more noticeable offensive performers of the afternoon.
- The combined goalkeeping duo of Patricia Vrysellas and Laura Arcella earned York their second shutout of the 2021 season.Â
