Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

LIONS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT OVER LAKEHEAD TO OPEN SEASON 2-0

The York University Lions men's hockey team continued its season on the road on Friday and defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 4-1 in Thunder Bay, Ont., marking their second straight win over their division rivals to start the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions kick-started the game with a goal late in the first period, as Brendan Browne took absolute advantage of the power play rewarded at 16:14, scoring his second goal in as many games for a 1-0 York lead after the opening frame.
  • The Thunderwolves wasted no time putting themselves on the board early in the second period, as Spencer Blackwell recorded his first goal of the season less than two minutes in, with assists by Griffen Fox and Taylor Egan.
  • Soon after, the Lions responded quickly to snap the tie when Alex Uryga put it past Thunderwolves netminder Blake Weyrick less than one minute after Blackwell's goal, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead going into the final frame.
  • York added two more tallies in the third period, with Nik Malenica registering his first goal of the season at 2:54 and Brandon Yeamans netting his second goal of the season after receiving a feed from Damian Figueira. It was more than enough to give the Lions their second straight win.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Both Lions netminder Brendan Bonello and Thunderwolves goaltender Blake Weyrick were outstanding. Bonello finished with 37 saves and just the one goal allowed, while Weyrick had 31 saves.
  • Braydon Buziak had another multi-point night with two assists and now has five points through two games (one goal, four assists).
