The York University Lions men's hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night in Thunder Bay, Ont., to wrap up their three-game series.
The Lions earned five of a possible six points on their trip north to start the season 2-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tyler Ho scored the game's first goal on a feed from Joe Mack and Jordan King, giving the Thunderwolves a 1-0 lead in the first period.
- The second period was action-packed, as the Lions got on the scoreboard at 6:58 with a goal by Brendan Browne, banking his third goal of the season in three appearances. Browne's goal was assisted by Braydon Buziak and Ben Evanish.
- Alex Uryga found the net three minutes after the Lions' first goal on an assist by Connor Senken at 9:12.
- Less than two minutes later, the Thunderwolves were quick to respond when Kyle Auger and Ho assisted Mack to tie the game 2-2.
- The Lions once again found their way past the Thunderwolves' defensive line, as Buziak shot a bullet past Thunderwolves' netminder Brock Aiken at 14:39 on a power play. The goal gave the Lions a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame.
- Thunderwolves' forward Cole Edwards found Ho at 9:08 to tie the game 3-3, giving him his second of the night. It was the only goal of the period, forcing overtime.
- The Thunderwolves were able to score at 5:45 into overtime with a goal by Ben Badalamenti assisted by Auger. The game-winner led the Thunderwolves to defeat the Lions 4-3.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Both teams fired 32 shots at each other, keeping both goalies on their feet the entire game. Lions netminder Dalton Ewing made a crucial 28 saves of the 32 shots to secure the one point for his team.
- Buziak and Browne both had tremendous weekends up north. Buziak recorded seven points (two goals, five assists) and Browne had four points (three goals, one assist) in the three games.
LOOKING AHEAD
After a weekend off, the Lions take another road trip to St. Catharines, Ont., where they look to familiarize themselves with another one of their OUA West Division opponents, the Brock University Badgers. The puck-drop is set for 7:15pm on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Jack Gatecliff Arena.
