The York University Lions women's hockey team was defeated by a score of 4-1 by the visiting Rams in the season opener for both teams at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 

• The Rams opened the scoring less than seven minutes into the first period on a goal by Lauren Nicholson and added to it midway through the second when Brooklyn Gemmill found the back of the net. Both goals came on the power play.
• There was a flurry of activity in the third period, beginning with a goal by Madison Davey at 1:23 that cuts the Rams' lead to 2-1.
• That was as close as the Lions would get, however. Brooke Michaud scored less than one minute later to extend the advantage to two again, and Emily Baxter rounded out the scoring at 5:31 of the final frame.

 
NOTABLE NUMBERS
 

• Julianna Thomson got the start in net for the season opener and was peppered with shots all night, ultimately making 37 saves.
• Taylor Coward earned the assist on Davey's first goal of the season.

These two teams will be back in action again on Saturday, this time downtown Toronto at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Puck drop is set for 4pm.
