Coming off being ranked No. 1 in the country for the second time in three weeks, the York University Lions men's soccer team was back at it on Saturday afternoon hosting an Algoma Thunderbirds team that was not only winless coming in, but also had yet to score a goal through its first six games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It only took three minutes for York to open the scoring, with Matthew Mollicola getting on the scoresheet after a beautiful through ball was threaded through the Algoma defense by Isaac Bradbury. That made it 1-0 Lions
- The Lions continued to create chances that would fail to be converted. However, a positional change between Justin Hendricks and Michael Pettiti in the 27th minute was the catalyst for the Lions second goal. Pettiti found Mollicola with a lofted pass who squared it to Marcel Tesolin, and he finished the easy tap-in after some beautiful team play. That extended the Lions lead to 2-0.
- Just a minute later, Mollicola turned from helper back to scorer as he potted his third goal in the last two games, continuing his hot play and making it 3-0 in favour of the Lions.
- Pettiti was at it again later in the half as he sent another nice cross into the box, and Jaytin Pabla, in turn, found Frankross Di Matteo. The sophomore made no mistake, and capped off the first half-scoring for the Lions, who enjoyed a 4-0 lead at the break.
- York record a fifth through a chance created by Ugatua Ebikeme, who's cut back was fired home by Justin Ciccohilo. His first career OUA goal made it 5-0 Lions.
- Two Lions hit crossbars in the second half. First, it was Tesolin hitting iron off a free kick, with Ebimeke and Cicchilo combining to create a dangerous chance for the Lions. Then, Pabla hits the bar with a free kick attempt of his own.
- Cicchillo scored his second after a fantastic pass from Adam LaFranco set up a Pettiti cross that was put him by Cicchillo for the 6th Lions goal of the day, which rounded out the scoring in the Lions 6-0 win.
