The No. 1 York University Men's Soccer team put on another dominating performance in the back half of a weekend doubleheader against the Algoma Thunderbirds at York Lions Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Lions showed why they're the top-ranked team in the nation, as they throttled the Thunderbirds 12-1. York improves their record to 7-0-1, upholding their undefeated streak at eight, as they continue to lead the OUA West table.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Coming off of a 6-0 victory over the Thunderbirds on Saturday, the Lions looked to emulate that performance in this one. They did just that with Sammy Ssebaduka igniting a scoring spree for the Lions. He pounded a loose ball past Thunderbirds keeper Joshua Bondoc in the opening minute to make it 1-0.
- Three minutes later, Issac Bradbury followed suit as he was able to split the Thunderbirds white jerseys and put the Lions up 2-0 in the 4th minute.
- Justin Cicchillo and Michael Pettiti put up a dominating performance in the first half, both securing hat-tricks.
- Vaughan Bianchi also added a first-half marker, and The Lions held a commanding 9-0 lead at halftime.
- The Lions maintained their authority in the second half as Ssebaduka was able to slide one past Bondoc, extending the margin to 10-0.
- Thierry Nsenga was able to put the Thunderbirds on the scoresheet for the first time all season in the 57th-minute mark for their lone goal of the day.
- Alessandro Calado registered two more goals for the Lions, the first one in the 67th minute and the second goal in the 87th minute, adding the final flurry in the Lions remarkable 12-1 victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
As part of a three-game road trip, the Lions will venture to Hamilton, Ont., to take on the McMaster Marauders in a contest that might have significant postseason ramifications. McMaster currently sits third in the OUA West table, six points behind the Lions for the top spot. The match is scheduled for 3:15 pm on Saturday, Oct. 8.
