After a tough weekend which saw the York University Lions women's soccer team squander a pair of second-half leads to the Guelph Gryphons last weekend, the team was back at it on Saturday afternoon against the Algoma Thunderbirds at York Lions Stadium in the first of a two-game weekend set. A win would vault the Lions into third position in the OUA West table.
The Lions had big days from Nia Fleming Thompson, who registered a goal and three assists, as well as Darci Faichnie, who scored twice. Also of note, rookie keeper Ava jones made her first career OUA start for the Lions in this one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions scored 30 seconds into the game after a cross into th nia fleming who threads the ball to Darci Faichnie who opens the scoring with a well placed shot in the bottom left corner.
- In the 34th minute, Faichnie scored her second of the, tapping home a ball assisted by Fleming-Thompson, who acquired her second assist of the game on the play.
- The second half started with a flurry of York chances, but Aysia Solomon made a few excellent stops to keep the Thunderbirds in the game.
- Bianca Jack was the first to score in the second half after she pounced on a rebound off a powershot from Fleming-Thompson and put it past Soloman to make it 3-0 Lions.
- Fleming-Thompson added a goal to her statline at the hour mark, scoring after taking the ball around the keeper and rolling it home for the fourth Lions goal of the match
- The Lions then scored their fifth of the day in the 68th minute via a corner which was sent into the box and put home by Paige De Santo, making it 5-0 York.
- Then in the 88th minute, the Lions were the beneficiaries of a penalty kick being awarded on a hard tackle in the box. Isabelle Guido stepped up to the spot and beat Soloman in the bottom left corner which solidified a 6-0 win for the Lions.

The Lions will face the Thunderbirds once again Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm at York Lions in the second game of the back-to-back weekend set.
