LIONS EARN SECOND STRAIGHT 6-0 VICTORY OVER THUNDERBIRDS

Nia Fleming-Thompson's two-goal performance was the difference maker for the York University Women's Soccer team and the Algoma University Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon.

The York Lions hosted the Algoma Thunderbirds in the second game of a weekend back-to-back matchup between the two clubs at York Lions Stadium. Coming off an impressive 6-0 win on Saturday, the Lions mirrored their outstanding performance from 24 hours prior, once again dominating the Thunderbirds by an 6-0 margin.

Ava Jones made her second consecutive start in this one, as she came away with back-to-back wins against the Thunderbirds – her first two in the OUA. The victory improves the Lions record to 5-1-2, moving them up to second in the OUA West table, behind the Western Mustangs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions opened up the match with a flurry of shots on net, outshooting the Thunderbirds 11-4. However, it wasn't until the 17th minute when the Lions opened the scoring. Darcy Faichnie sent a cross into Julianna Servello, who made no mistake, putting it into the open net to give her side a 1-0 lead.
  • 10 minutes later, Fleming-Thompson, the first-year Missisuaga, Ont. native, took charge, as she erupted for back-to-back huge goals. The first one came off a cross from Servello who found an open Fleming-Thompson for the Lions second goal of the match in the 27th minute.
  • 52 seconds after that, Fleming-Thompson split the Algoma defence for her second goal of the contest, to extend the Lions lead to 3-0 heading into halftime.
  • Kalifornia Mitchell continued York's momentum in the second half, as she scored off a feed from Jotam Chouhan to leave the Thunderbirds netminder, Makayla Townes in the dust and make it 4-0 Lions.
  • 13 minutes later, Chouhan stepped up to take a free kick, and took complete advantage, cushioning York's lead to 5-0.
  • Maria Perri wasted no time after entering as a substitute and score her first OUA goal at the 77th-minute mark to put an exclamation mark on the Lions 6-0 victory in the second of a back-to-back rematch against the Thunderbirds.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions hit the road for a three-game road trip, as they head down to Hamilton to play the McMaster Marauders in a game that could have big playoff implications. The game is set for Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 pm.
