Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

LIONS RUN UNBEATEN STREAK TO DOUBLE DIGITS, LOCK UP FIRST PLACE IN OUA WEST

The first 45 minutes of Sunday's match against the Laurier Golden Hawks weren't exactly something to write home about, as they say, for the York University Lions men's soccer team. They were held without a shot at goal in the opening half, but got to the locker room scoreless thanks to some solid defensive play.

The Lions were, however, able to score twice in the second half to earn a 2-0 win. That victory secures them first place in the OUA West table. The only thing left to be decided is whether York can clinch first in the conference.

They are two points behind the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, who have one game remaining next Saturday against Nipissing. With victories in both of their final two games, or one win and a Ridgebacks loss to the Lakers, the Lions will finish first in the OUA.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Despite an inauspicious start for the Lions offence, they were able to stay in the game thanks to some suffocating defence in the midfield. Laurier only attempted three shots in the first half, with one hitting the target.
  • York found its legs in the second half, and Joey Mac broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with his 2nd of the year to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
  • Then, in the 88th, Justin Hendricks added some insurance with his 3rd of the season and 2nd in as many games. That solidified a 2-0 Lions win.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will look to keep their winning ways going as they travel to Brock to battle the Badgers in the final road game of the regular season. The action begins at 8:15 pm
