The York University Lions men's soccer team came into Saturday's matchup with the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton as the top-ranked men's soccer program in the country. They also entered play as the lone undefeated side in the OUA.
They had a chance to continue both reigns against a Marauaders team battling to secure a playoff spot in a crowded OUA West. The Marauders came into action Saturday just a point up on Brock for fifth in the division and six points up on Laurier for the sixth and final playoff berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- As has been the case often this season, the Lions got on the board early. Soji Olatoye, who made his first start in six matches for the Lions, put one home in the 24th minute to make it 1-0 in favour of the visitors.
- Then, in the final minutes of the first half, York extended its lead. This time, it was courtesy of Jaydin Pabla. The second-year midfielder doubled the Lions lead to 2-0, which they carried into the break.
- It was a dominant first half performance from the red and white. York outshot McMaster 18-1 in the first 45, and finished with 16 shots on target for the match.
- It didn't take long in the second half for the Lions to add goal number 3. Justin Hendricks netted his second of the season in the 52nd minute, to make it 3-0 Lions.
- York rode those three markers over the final 38 minutes of play, keeping McMaster off the scoreboard. That's something else that has been a common theme for the Lions in 2022. This was York's 6th clean sheet over their first nine games.
- The Lions maintain a five-point lead over Western for top spot in the OUA West, and move back ahead of the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks for the most points in the entire province.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will look to stretch their lossless streak to double digits next Sunday, October 16, when they face the Laurier Golden Hawks. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 pm from University Stadium in Waterloo.
