The York University Lions women's soccer team was hoping two wins over the last-place Algoma Thunderbirds were the catalyst to a turning around their season.
That may seem odd being that they entered Saturday's matchup with the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in third place in the OUA West and in a good position to host a home playoff game. However, after two blown second-half leads resulting in a draw and a loss against the Guelph Gryphons, the Lions had left much to be desired.
The Lions had a chance to discover some of that lost treasure against a Marauder team right on the edge of the playoff picture. McMaster entered play in 7th place, but just two points out of the sixth and final playoff spot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- This one got off to a less-than-ideal start for the visiting Lions. In just the second minute, McMaster's Madison Goertz got her side on the board first
- The shots in the first half finished 13-11 in favour of York, with both teams getting their share of looks offensively.
- The Lions drew level early in the second half, as Nia Fleming-Thompson continued to add to her goal total with her 7th of the season. With that marker in the 49th minute, she has now scored in six of her last seven matches.
- The Lions began to control the flow of the match as it progressed, outshooting the Marauders 8-2 in the second half.
- They could not put another goal past McMaster keeper Ali Mudie, and had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw.
- That draw moves the Lions three points up on Brock for third in the OUA West and just four behind division-leading Western.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Next up for the Lions is a trip to Laurier to take on a Golden Hawks team fighting for its playoff lives. As of the end of play Saturday, they sit just a point up on Marauders for the final OUA West playoff berth. Kickoff from University Stadium in Waterloo is set for 1:00 pm.
