LIONS SUFFER HOME DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF NO. 6 VARSITY BLUES

The York University Lions women's hockey team attempted to avenge their difficult 1-0 defeat to the Western Mustangs last night, but fell short  once again in another nail-biting contest.

The York University Lions hosted their cross-town rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday afternoon, and dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 6 Blues.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With just over seven minutes left in the first period, Emma Potter potted one on the power play to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.
  • The score stayed that way after one period, with the Blues outshooting York 10-7 in the first.
  • The second period patterned the first with both teams having their chances, this time with the Lions taking the upper hand with 7-6 shots. However, neither was able to break through, and the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes of play.
  • Aili McKeown doubled the Blues lead almost four minutes into the third period, as she found the back of the net, beating Lions netminder Emma Wedgewood to make it 2-0 Toronto.
  • The Blues capped off the scoring with a final marker from Katy McKenna into an empty net with just over a minute to go to seal a 3-0 victory.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions have the week off, before they hit the road to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers on Friday. The Lions will seek to exact revenge for their 5-2 setback in the previous contest against the Lakers in their home opener. The game is scheduled for 7 pm.
