With a spectacular third-period performance, the York University Lions women's hockey team took down the undefeated Nipissing Lakers, snapping their five-game win streak.
Â
Heading over to Nipissing Ont., the Lions were eyeing an act of revenge from a 5-2 season opener loss on home ice, as they did just that with a convincing 3-1 victory Friday night. Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game commenced with a scoreless first period, with both teams unable to capitalize on four shots each.Â
- The Lakers took control of the game in the second frame, outshooting the Lions 12-7. Maggie McKee was able to break the ice, as she put the Lakers up one at 3:06.
- After being scoreless through the first two periods, the Lions erase the zeros off the scoresheet with a delayed penalty goal by Jillian Milligan, who scored her first of the season at 8:03.
- With the momentum high for York, Julia Cuccia found Sydney Paulson on a breakaway who slid a back-handed shot between the legs of Chloe Marshall, forcing a Nipissing timeout at 16:52.
- With pressure from the undefeated Lakers, Juliana Thomson was able to steal every opportunity taken by the blue and green jerseys, as she made 27 of the 28 saves.
- Brooke Anderson went on to seal the victory for the Lions with a final open net goal in the dying seconds of regulation.    Â
