It wasn't easy on the hearts, but the York University Lions women's soccer team is through to the OUA semi-finals.
Joselyn Gagliardi scored the decisive penalty to give the Lions a 3-2 win (5-3 in penalties) over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon in the OUA quarter-finals.
That came on the heels of a furious comeback by the Gryphons in the final 10 minutes of regulation to rally from two goals down, including the equalizer just seconds prior to the end of stoppage time.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a couple aggressive attacks from York in the Gryphons half that resulted in some great looks for Nia Fleming-Thompson, the Lions got on the board. One of those shots from Fleming-Thompson was stopped by Gryphons keeper Joanna Redlich, and the rebound eventually fell to Draci Fachine who scored the game's first goal in the 26th minute.
- The second came moments later, in the 30th with Fleming-Thompson rolling the ball past the Guelph defense eventually ending up one on one with Redlich. She smashed the ball past her into the net to make it 2-0 Lions.
- The Gryphons best chance in the first half came off a free-kick in the Lions half that was headed over the bar in the final minutes of play before halftime.
- The Lions maintained their lead for most of the second half, with corners taken by Darci Fachnie nearly extending the Lion's lead on nearly missing the target.
- The Gryphons gave themselves a chance with a beautiful free-kick by Anna Berardi that found its way past Patricia Vrysellas to cut the lead in half
- Later, Bianca Jack played a pinpoint longball to Fleming-Thompson who weaved through the Guelph defense before striking a shot that lacked power and was collected by Redlich.
- The Gryphons equalized in the final minute of regulation after winning a free-kick on the left wing. It was taken by Berardi, and met the head of Olivia Brown to tie the game and send it to extra time.
- After a scoreless half hour of extra time, we were off to penalties to decide it. The Lions scored on all five penalties. Goals from Jotam Chouhan, Paige De Santo, Brooklyn Mitchell, Bianca Jack and Joselyn Gagliardi did the trick, as the Lions advance to the OUA semi-final.
