The York University Lions women's hockey team opened up a weekend back-to-back in Kingston on Saturday night with a 4-0 loss to the Queen's Gaels.
The Lions came in off a solid weekend last weekend, splitting a pair of games with the Nipissing Lakers and Waterloo Warriors, both nationally-ranked programs. The Gaels, meanwhile, entered Saturday's game with three wins to their credit; the only problem – none had come in regulation.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions were right with the Gaels through most of the first half of this one. Shots were 14-14 after one in what foreshadowed a track meet of a game.
- Things remained scoreless until 11 minutes into period two, when Queen's' Alyson Reeves bested Emma Wedgewood to give her club a 1-0 lead.
- Then, under a minute later, the Gaels extended their lead. This time, it was Charlotte Melindy beating Wedgewood to make it 2-0.
- The Lions were still right in it, however, being outshot 26-25 and only down a pair heading into the final frame.
- Early in that final frame – the back-breaker. Quinn Johnson scored the Gaels third goal of the night to put some real breathing room between them and the Lions.
- Just under three minutes later, Alexandra Maw put to bed any Lion comeback hopes, as she made it 4-0 Gaels, which was the final score.
- Despite the scoreline, this was a real goaltenders battle. Rookie Gaels goalie Vanessa Campeau stopped all 40 shots she faced for the shutout and the Gaels first regulation win of the year. Emma Wedgewood wasn't too shabby, herself, as she turned away 42 of 45 shots directed her way.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The beauty of sports is you don't have much time to dwell on a loss. The Lions are right back at it tomorrow night, Sunday, Nov. 13, when they host the Brock Badgers. Action begins at 4:15 pm from Canlan Ice Sports.
