A game-high 21-point performance by
Lauren Golding proved to be the determining factor in the matchup between Toronto cross-town rivals, as the York University women's basketball team downed the Toronto Varsity Blues 73-55 Wednesday evening at the Tait McKenzie Centre to win their second-straight season contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bilan Khadar opens the scoring by putting the Lions on the board first with a three-pointer. As the Lions gained momentum early in the game, they went on a 14-5 run to end the quarter, alongside Alexis Grewal's buzzer-beating jump shot which capped off the quarter to give the Lions a 21-9 edge against the Blues.
- Faith Joseph of the Blues made an effort to put her squad in the game, scoring 10 of the team's 16 points in the quarter, and cutting the margin to 17-23 early in the second. However, the Lions offence found its footing and surged for an 18-point performance, with Golding and Khadar scoring a combined 11 points to lead the way. York cushioned a 39-25 advantage over the Blues at halftime.
- After the break, the Blues returned to the court with a fitting response, outscoring the Lions 23-15 in the third frame. A four-three-pointer performance by the team helped to cut the deficit to single digits, as Toronto trailed 54-48.
- The Lions once again rediscovered their stride, as they went on to bolster their advantage to 17 points with five minutes into the final frame.
- The Lions demonstrated both their offensive and defensive prowess over the Blues, giving up just seven points in the quarter. The dominance on both ends lifted them to a 73-55 victory over the Blues.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"We started the first half really well, we did a really good job at taking care of the boards and giving ourselves second-chance opportunities. But in the third quarter, they out-rebounded us and got back in the game. But we re-gained momentum in the fourth. Lauren (Golding) picked it up defensively and had some key steals in transition, and was extremely efficient in her scoring today to propel us to this victory." — head coach
