The York University Lions women's basketball team hung around most of the afternoon on Saturday against the ninth-ranked team in the country, the Guelph Gryphons, but fell 82-72 to the Gryphons in Guelph
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams went back and forth early, and the Lions led 7-6. From there, the Gryphons went on a 14-0 run, and led 20-7 with three minutes to go in the first.
- The Lions responded, as Lauren Golding hit a jumper to snap the run, and ignited a 9-0 Lions spurt to end the first quarter, cutting the Gryphons lead to four, 20-16 after one.
- Guelph stretched their lead back into ten points in the second quarter as their elusiveness in the open floor was causing trouble for the Lions. From there the game went into a back and forth tussle as substitute forwards Maya Abouzeid and Bilan Khadar both scored lay-ups and a three pointer from Abouzeid to keep the Lions in the game
- Golding scored two free throws at the end of the quarter to trim the Gryphons lead to 47-39 at half-time
- The Lions were able to narrow the gap in the third quarter as a three-pointer from Kiara Leveridge in the last minute of the frame made it 61-57 Guelph after three.
- Five straight points from Jada Codrington in the opening minute of the fourth gave the Lions the lead for the first time in the game, 62-61.
- Unfortunately the Lions could not build on that lead, as the Gryphons outscored them 21-10 over the final 9:03 and took the game 82-72 to remain undefeated at 4-0.
