LIONS HAND BADGERS THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS WITH IMPRESSIVE HOME WIN

The York University Lions women's basketball team topped the OUA Central-leading, the Brock Badgers in a 66-58 victory Friday evening at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The victory improves the Lions record to 3-4, and the Badgers drop their third straight and fall to 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lions opened the contest with hot hands, as Jada Codrington gave the Lions an early 10-7 lead with a three-point shot which paved a path for a 15-2 run. Codrington, Lauren Golding and Avery Bathe-Minard all hit threes during the run to force a Brock timeout. The Lions led the Badgers 25-11 after the opening quarter while putting up four three-pointers.
  • The Badgers countered with a run of their own in the second, as they responded with a 12-1 spurt to trim the lead to 26-23 five minutes into the second quarter. Despite being outscored 14-6 in the quarter, the Lions managed to retain a 31-25 advantage at halftime.
  • Cynna King's jumper started the third quarter on the right foot for the Lions, as she re-ignited the Lions offence. They went on a 14-6 run during the first four minutes of the third. The Lions 22-point quarter pushed their lead to 53-38 heading to the fourth.
  •  The Badgers battled their way back into the game, cutting the Lion lead to six in the final minute, but York was able to clamp down defensively late, and cruised to a 66-58 victory.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"We started with great intensity and energy, and what we do well. In the second quarter we had a little bit of slump, but made adjustments in the second half to contain Theresa Brown. There is still need for improvement, but taking down the number one team in the division is big for us." — head coach Christa Eniojukan

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will return to home court on Saturday, Dec. 3, where they will seek revenge from their 89-81 loss to the McMaster Marauders from Nov. 11. Tip-off is slated for 6 pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
