Despite a two-goal night for first-year forward
Lola Massey, it wasn't enough for the York University Lions women's hockey team, as the squad dropped a 6-3 contest to the OUA West-leading Waterloo Warriors Friday night at Canlan Sports.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions opened the first period with bang, wasting no time to find the back of the net when Sydney Paulson puck intercepted a pass in front of the Warriors net, deking out Kara Mark to put York up 1-0 at 3:51.
- After a tight back-and-forth stretch in the early part of the frame, Tatum James of the Warriors responded with a one-timer off a Leah Herrfort assist to tie the contest at 1-1 with four minutes remaining in the first.
- The second period was a tale of a five-goal period, with the Warriors outshooting York 14-6. Kassidy McCarthy kicked off Waterloo's goal spree off a bouncing puck, putting it past Emma Wedgewood at 3:11.
- Less than a minute after McCarthy's tally, a wide-open Brooklyn Cole connected with a slapshot to put it behind Wedgewood and grab a 3-1 lead.
- With no warrior jersey in her way, Massey gave some life to the Lions, as she got an open look at the net, cutting the deficit to 3-2 at 5:10.
- The Warriors with a hot hand, strike twice more in the second period, with Lyndsy Acheson securing her first goal of the season, followed by Carley Olivier's one-on-one faceoff with Wedgewood, off which she capitalized, extending the margin to 5-2 at the end of the second frame.
- The Warriors continued to add insurance to their lead in the final frame, as ??Keiara Raitt counted another tally, putting the game out of reach for the Lions at 6-2.
- However, with the Lions still showing signs of life, Massey fired a shorthanded goal at 11:10, tallying her second of the night. Despite the 11 shots in the period, the Lions were unable to dig their way past the Warriors, falling by a score of 6-3.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"I was happy with some parts of our game, I liked our penalty kill- we were a hundred percent on that. It was great to see
Lola Massey, one of our first years get her two first goals, and I think we were just a little too inconsistent to be the top team tonight."
