LIONS PRODUCE BEST OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE IN 10 YEARS IN WIN OVER ONTARIO TECH

ARPAN KAUR // yorkulions.ca

The York University Lions men's basketball broke out of their five-game losing streak in a big way Wednesday night, with a dominating 112-68 win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at Tait McKenzie Centre.

The win is one of significance – the first by 40-plus points in a single game since Jan. 13, 2013, when they beat the RMC Paladins 107-49.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions got right to work in the first quarter, opening up a 15-point lead in the first five minutes of the game. Prince Kamunga fired multiple three pointers to kick off what turned out to be a great offensive performance. The Lions led 36-18 after one.
  • The red and white would continue their play in the second and third quarters, using a familiar offensive firepower to take a commanding 79-46 lead at the end of the third.
  • The Ridgebacks made a valiant attempt in the fourth scoring 22 points, the most in the game, however, the double-digit performances of Kamunga, Tyler Pryce, and Somto Dimanochie in the fourth was enough to keep the Ridgebacks at bay.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"This game was definitely our most complete effort from start to finish. We've been looking for this all season; a maximum effort on both ends. For us, as coaches, it's really encouraging to finally see us break through. We always believed the potential we had as a group, now it's just a matter of continuing to get better and play even better on Saturday." — head coach Nate Philippe

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • The Lions were led by guard, Kamunga with an outstanding 34 points, perfect at the free-throw line and went 7-11 from behind the arc. Followed by Dimanochie who registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
  • The Lions outperformed the Ridgebacks from behind the arc with a 46.7% three-point average and managed to give up only nine turnovers compared to the 24 by the Ridgebacks.
  • The Ridgeback were led by AJ Cummings and Anthony Pate both with 17 points each.
