A boisterous Lions crowd led the way as the York University women's basketball team hosted their final regular-season game on Saturday evening at home, downing the Toronto Varsity Blues 69-56.
They now head into the OUA playoffs with a 10-6 record, having won seven of their last eight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions hosted their annual senior day prior to the match, honouring their graduating senior guards Emma Jonas, Emma McCamus, and Alysha Pinck.
- The Blues started to pull away early in the second with a 7-0 run, but the Lions were quick to respond, putting together a run of their own, which was ignited by a Kiara Leveridge block, leading to a three by Avery Bathe-Minard, who hit nothing but net to tie the game at 27-27.
- Much like the first two quarters, both teams came in hustling and exchanging baskets in the third quarter to keep the game tight. Despite this, the Blues managed to keep the game in their hands for a large percentage of the quarter.
- Nonetheless, McCamus added onto her grad game by making two quick back-to-back plays in the final minutes of the third, cutting the lead to 53-52.
- The Lions surged on both sides of the court in the fourth quarter. After tying the game at 58-58 with three minutes into the quarter, they raced out to a 13-0 run to finish the game while holding off the Blues on a 7:15 shooting drought.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"I am really happy with the strides the team took in the second semester. We came out playing better defence than last night, but we still need to clean it up ahead of the playoffs now. Defence is what leads to our offence, so we need to continue that as we have more depth compared to some of the other teams." — head coach
Christa Eniojukan
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- McCamus led the way for the Lions with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals. Accompanied by Leveridge who registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
- The Lions took full advantage of the Blues' second-chance points, scoring 19 points to the Blues' four.
LOOKING AHEAD
After securing their playoff berth, the Lions must now await the announcement of their opponent and playoff schedule ahead of next week.
