LIONS KEEP ROAD WARRIOR ROLE IN ROUT OF QUEEN’S IN KINGSTON

ARPAN KAUR // yorkulions.ca

Much like their last contest, the York University Lions women's hockey team came in search of another season-defying victory, and they did just that. They kept their playoff hopes alive, earning a convincing 5-1 win over the Queen's Gaels at the Kingston Memorial Centre on Friday evening.

The Lions had an impressive run in their last few games, and it paid off tonight as they improved to 3-11-1 and keep their hold on the fifth and final playoff spot in the OUA East.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scout Watkins Southward opened the scoring for the Gaels, as she puts it past Lions netminder Juliana Thomson at 6:11. That would be their first and only goal of the night.
  • After that, the second and third period was all Lions, as Julianna Duma knotted the game up on a power play, securing her first goal of the campaign from an assist by Abby Hooper who banked her first assist of the season at 17:32.
  • The Lions took off in the third period, as Kelsey McHolm breaks the tie at 6:38 to lead by one. Two minutes later, Lexi Anonech adds another tally at 8:44.
  • Brooke Anderson and Ava Ricker-Singh would add two York insurance goals, the first one at 13:30 on a power play, and the second in the dying seconds of the third on an empty, to give them a 5-1 victory.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • The Lions racked up a total of 12 points with five goals and seven assists, and the Gaels banked two points on a goal and an assist.
LOOKING AHEAD

Lions look to play their final regular-season game on home ice against the Queen's Gaels on Mar. 5 at Canlan Ice Sports before the post-season. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 pm.
