The York University Lions badminton team went into the OUA championship with a perfect record, and came within a match win of striking gold. But they took away a silver medal after a remarkable weekend at the University of Waterloo.
The Lions had a relatively untouched path to the finals including 8-1 and 6-0 quarter-final and semifinal victories over Guelph and Ottawa respectively.
York went toe-to-toe with crosstown rival Toronto through all 10 of the matches played with the final result ending with five wins a piece but the Blues were awarded the overall championship title with having accumulated more points throughout the matches.
The Blues were led by mixed doubles pairs Jonathan Chien and Rebecca Lee who won a crucial three set match, winning the third set 24-22 to secure a massive win for the Blues. The men's doubles pair of Jonathan Lai and Colin Jia also secured some key points for Toronto with a 2-0 victory over Chang Shing and
Jason Ho-Shue of the Lions. In singles action, Katie Ho-Shue of Toronto was clutch in her match to earn a big win for her side, defeating Sharon Au of the Lions 2-0 (21-8, 21-12).
