OLAY’S 119-YARD KICK RETURN TOUCHDOWN HIGHLIGHTS YORK OFFENCE IN DEFEAT AT CARLETON

A first quarter 119-yard kick return touchdown for Alfred Olay wasn't enough to carry the York University Lions football team past the Carleton Ravens Saturday afternoon. The Ravens took the game by a 45-14 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions' third possession of the first quarter saw Noah Craney repeatedly look to Melchis Ilunga to lug the football downfield, and the first-year runningback put the Lions into good field position to score early. After a 25-yard run to the Carleton 35-yard line, Derek Giacobbi came out to kick a field goal. He put his kick wide right, but it had the distance to carry out of the end zone for a rouge at 5:44 of the first quarter.
  • Minutes later, the Lions recieved what could potentially be the play of the season. After Carleton's Brandon Forcier directed a field goal attempt wide right of the uprights, Olay jetted the ball toward the Ravens' special teams unit, dodged four tackles on his way up the middle, and took the ball all the way to the opposite end zone. The 109-yard kick return gave them a 7-0 lead.
  • Carleton had a response before the quarter break, however, with Shaiheem Charles-Brown recording a touchdown when he recovered a loose football in the York end zone to make the score tied 7-7.
  • The Ravens then took the lead in the second quarter, with both Ferdinand twins adding majors to the Carleton point total. First, Ravens quarterback Tanner DeJong threaded a pass to Kaseem Ferdinand who was open in the middle of the end zone.
  • Then it was a run by Denny Ferdinand who extended the Ravens lead with a lengthy run, eluding York's Winston Coore on his stroll into the Lions end zone. Those two plays by the twins blew the game open for Carleton.
  • Carleton kept piling on the offense right until the whistle sounded to end the first half, leading York 35-7 by the end of the game's first stanza.
  • Craney had a first down at the Carleton 25-yard line, but had to scramble to get out of trouble and found Iliunga with a pass, who juked three Carleton defenders and put York at first-and-goal. Craney made good on the opportunity one play later, nailing Isaiah Edwards with a touchdown pass. That made the score 35-14 at 2:12 of the third quarter.
  • After the Ravens added a field goal on the subsequent drive, then extended their lead with one more touchdown before the game came to an end.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Olay's 109-yard kick return was not his only long run during the game, when he returned another kickoff for 81 yards. He had 290 total return yards on the game, a season high for York.
  • Craney's day ended at 10-for-22, with a total of 85 yards. His longest toss was for 19 yards.
