LIONS BATTLE IN LOSS AGAINST LAURIER

ARPAN KAUR // yorkulions.ca

Despite a valiant effort, the York University Lions football team will still search for their first home win of 2022 later in the season.  The Lions dropped a 32-1 contest, falling to 1-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A competitive tactical showdown initiated between the two squads, as neither was able to penetrate the others defensive lines. Matt Dean made an outstanding defensive play on an interception for the Lions with 3:53 left in the first quarter, giving York a solid look at the end zone, however, York would fumble the football later in the drive.
  • Laurier opens the scoring for the afternoon, with a 19-yard field goal by Dawson Hodge that made contact with the upright first, then ultimately deflected back between the posts at 8:49, to give the Golden Hawks a 3-0 lead.
  • Soon after, the Hawks add to their lead as Taylor Elgersma threaded a 17-yard pass to Nick Petermann for a touchdown to lead 10-0.
  • With 2:32 remaining in the second quarter, Derek Giacobbi records a rouge to put the Lions on the board. Laurier added another field goal before the end of the half, with Hodge nailing a field goal on the final play of the first half.
  • Quentin Scott made a quick cut for a 15-yard run past the Lions defenders for a touchdown at 2:26 of the third, cushioning a 20-1 lead.
  • Laurier continued finding ways to secure their lead, as Elgersma completed another 15-yard pass to Ethan Jordan for the third touchdown of the match, extending the lead to 28-1.
  • Hodge calls game with a final 41-yard field goal, wrapping up the game at 32-1.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

On playing severely shorthanded due to injuries… "I'm really proud of these guys. They battled. We did a lot of good things today. We played some tremendous defence. We moved the football extremely well." – head coach Warren Craney

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Jason Janvier-Messier, Dawson Davis, and Matt Dean had standout defensive performances leading the York defence with six tackles each.
  • Noah Craney led the way for the Lions as he went 18-31 on passing for a total of 165-yards.
  • Laurier was led by the terrific passing from Elgersma, as he went 17-25 on 201-yard passing.
